The Duchess of Cambridge saved the most glamorous for last on her three-day tour of New York City. On Tuesday evening, at approximately 7:10 p.m., William and Kate arrived at the Met to attend a gala celebrating the 600th anniversary of St. Andrew’s, the couple’s alma mater. A crowd of over 200 fans had been waiting patiently—behind barriers on the east side of 5th Avenue, across the steps from the Met—for hours before the Duke and Duchess arrived. The rain, which had plagued the city for the entire day, stopped in the late afternoon, as if in honor of the glitziness of this event, which also drew Anna Wintour, Olivier Sarkozy and Mary-Kate Olsen, and Seth Meyers.

Kate looked resplendent in a midnight blue Jenny Packham gown, which she has worn twice before, at the 100 Women in Hedge Funds dinner in October 2013, and at the National Portrait Gallery function in February of this year. This time around, she paired it with staggering emerald-and-diamond earrings, which were a private gift, and an up-do (to the pleasure of two young Kate fans in front of us, who had told us they were crossing their fingers the Duchess would wear her hair up for the event).

When Kate and William arrived, the crowd—as they have at many of the events over the past few days—erupted, phones raised above their heads. As Kate and William walked up the steps, there were numerous shouts (from photographers and fans) of “Kate, turn around!” and “Kate, we love you!” After getting about half-way up the stairs, she did, in fact, turn around, waving to the fans across the street for about three seconds, just enough to placate them (“Did you get it? Did you get it???!” we heard from a number of people around us after she turned back around post-wave).

The Kate-heads we talked to in the crowd echoed a refrain we’ve heard many times before: her relatability is intrinsic to her appeal. “I think [her popularity is related to] the idea that she could be any one of us,” young professional Shaina Katz said, “Also, I think, there’s quite a throwback to the Princess Diana days in terms of her personability and in how she and Will really engage with the public.” “The fact that she’s a commoner and that anyone could have been her, and now she’s a princess—it’s just amazing,” Christine Shepherd gushed, before telling us she bought a blue prom dress senior year because Kate had just worn blue in her engagement photos.

Kate’s education also was cited as key to her appeal. “I get the impression she’s more than just a pretty face, in terms of her background in academia,” Katz said. “There’s that element that you can have a bit more of an in-depth conversation with her than with other celebrities.” Or, as college student Sonya Koh—who told us she had been “loving Kate” since the royal wedding—put it: “Out of all the celebrities out there right now, she is the one that epitomizes class.”
